A People Saved to Serve: Exodus 19:1-6

This morning, we come to a central chapter in the book of Exodus. In fact, it’s one of the most important
chapters in the Bible. For it establishes Israel as God’s special nation. This event points us to the New
Covenant and who we are now because of what God has done in Christ Jesus the Lord.

The Place of Meeting vs. 1-2
Vs. 1-2, The Israel is out of Egypt and now they camp: The people of Israel are now three months free of
the Egypt’s slavery, redeemed by the LORD. They are now encamped at the base of Mt. Sinai.
Application: God Always Keeps His Word! Ex. 3:12

The People’s Identity vs. 3-4
Vs. 3, Moses goes up: God speaks to Moses who serves as the mediator (he alone went up the mountain to
meet with God) he is to speak to Israel for God. The language that He uses in the titles of Israel “house of
Jacob, people of Israel” declares that the covenant of Abraham was being renewed.
Vs. 4, God speaks & reminds: “You have seen, and you know” The reminder of what God had done: Israel
was the redeemed people of God because they were the covenant people of God. Only by God’s grace.
Application: Be reminded what God has done for you and embrace your new identity in Christ.

The Purpose of Redemption vs. 5-6
Vs. 5a, “Now therefore comes before the If you will,” In light of your identity receive and obey the command
of your King! Eph. 4:1; Rom.12
Vs. 5b-6, The purpose of Israel’s salvation was for them to reflect God to the nations around them.
o They were a God’s treasured possession among all the peoples: Precious; You are a most prized
holy treasure in the treasury of the King and He has chosen you from all the peoples of the earth,
for all earth is God’s! Deut. 7:6; 26:18; Titus 2:11-14
o They were to be a kingdom of priests: Priestly; In other words, to be a kingdom of priests, means
that we are a people with a special closeness to God and a special calling from God. Rev. 1:6
o They were to be a holy nation: Peculiar; A people who are peculiar, a set apart people who are
consecrated to the Lord to display His grace and glory! 1Pet 2:9-12; 1Cor 6:19-20
