The Mountain of God vs. 1
This was the place of preparation and revelation.
The preparation of Moses continues. He has gone from the palace to the pasture as an under shepherd who is all alone and about to have an encounter with God Almighty in the normal course of his every day life. Gen. 46:33-34
The Appearance of God vs. 2-3
The miracle of the burning bush is that is God showing himself in His
holiness and glory.
vs. 2-3, The Lord appeared to Moses through a burning bush. What he discovered was that the bush was not some kind of natural wonder but a supernatural sign that communicates a spiritual truth. The burning bush revealed the very being of God, I believe this is appearance of the pre-incarnate Christ. Deut. 4:24
The Call of God. vs. 4-6
The call of God is personal, purposeful, revealing, and terrifying.
vs. 4, It is personal, God calls Moses by his name twice which signifies intimacy. God calls Moses into a personal relationship with Him. Come into my presence so that you may know my plan!
vs. 5, It is purposeful, God is calling him to holiness, don’t come near, take off your sandals. When God calls a person, it is always a call to holiness.
vs. 6, It reveals the identity of who God is.By declaring who He, He is reminding Moses of His covenant promises that He made long ago that his father (Amram) must have trusted in, and He is also reminding him of his own belonging to this covenant community. The response of Moses to the presence of God is fear and hiding. Deut. 7:20; Job 13:20; Is. 6:1-3
The Pronouncement of God vs. 7-10
He speaks to the present situation of His people in Egypt and what He purposes
to do. He is fully aware of the situation and He is coming down to deliver!
vs. 7-8, I have seen…, heard…, know…, and I am coming to deliver them out and bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land that is flowing with milk and honey.
vs. 9, serves as a reminder of what was said in verse 7-8 and that God knows full well the oppression of His people and He is going to answer their cry.
vs.10, God tells Moses that he is the one that He has chosen to deliver His people from the land of Israel, the house of bondage, he will lead them to the land of Canaan. Moses is now God’s under shepherd!
