The Sanhedrin, led by the chief priests, falsely accused Jesus of blasphemy and sedition. They convinced Pilate, the Roman governor, to sentence Jesus to death. Pilate, uninterested in blasphemy, accepted the accusation. Jesus’ response was intriguing. He accepted the title “king,” but hinted that he was not the type of king Pilate understood. Pilate was amazed by Jesus’ silence. He had no idea that Jesus was the silent, sinless lamb of God who had come to rescue sinful men. Application: Adapted from J.C. Ryle

  • Jesus’ silence speaks to His meekness and lowliness. Let us always be amazed at our Savior! Adam, the first man, was guilty but tried to excuse himself. The second man, Jesus, was guiltless but made no defense. The love of Christ on display. Hebrews 12:3

  • Jesus’ silence shows his patience in suffering. 1 Peter 2:20-21 Learn from our Savior’s example: suffer patiently, don’t complain, and be mindful of your tongue in temptation (Psalm 39:1).
