I. (Vv 11-12) The God Who Is: The Sufficient One
a. Moses asked the right question from a perspective of humility, after taking matters into his own hands in Egypt, he fled to Midian and spent 40 years in obscurity (God’s preparation for Moses).
b. Moses asks God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?” because he seems the least and most inadequate person to do so. Moses recognized that he fled his adoptive home in the palace, and he was rejected by the Hebrew people. Notice that God doesn’t build up Moses confidence, but He shifts the focus to his presence and provision.
II. (Vv. 13-15) The God Who Is: Gives a Mission in His Name
a. Moses asks God for His name and God reveals Himself as Yahweh (I AM) the eternal, self-existent One. Notice how deeply personal, relational and covenantal – He is the God of Abraham, The God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. This will give Moses favor in the eyes of the elders of Israel and will ensure that Moses is not alone in his Mission. True unity comes in the name of the I AM because of who He is.
III. (Vv. 16-20) The God Who Is: Sovereign Ruler and Sustainer
a. God prepares Moses for opposition from Pharaoh – Notice God is not surprised by this resistance, as he is sovereign over it. This is not man’s plan for deliverance, but God’s certain decree. God’s mission is not hindered by Kings, hard hearts, or spiritual powers. Keep proclaiming the truth and live with confidence in God’s timing and authority.
IV. (Vv. 21-22) The God Who Is: The Ultimate Provider
a. God not only sends and strengthens – he provides. Israel will leave Egypt not in poverty, but with favor and provision. (Gen. 15:14) God tells Moses that there are people in the Promised Land that he will encounter, and there is provision given in the message he is to deliver to Pharaoh. God knows this will not be acceptable to Pharaoh, but this is the God who KNOWS and REMEMBERS His people’s affliction. His mighty Hand is greater than that of Pharaoh’s, and those who struck the Children of Israel will soon be struck by the hand of the “I AM”. God’s provision often comes in unexpected ways, but we are called to walk forward in faith and trust in Him. Trust God to supply and equip you to fulfill His work in You. (2 Peter 1:3)
Final Application: Moses asked, “Who am I, and Who are You?” and God answered with “I will be with you, and I AM WHO I AM. Our calling is not about our strength, but who God is. The same God who called Moses, revealed his name, overcame Pharaoh and bondage – now calls us to repent, trust, obey and go – all in the only name given under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)
