God prepares His chosen deliverer not through power and position, but through rejection, exile, and surrender. Moses’ story shows us the necessity of divine timing and obedience, and it ultimately foreshadows the perfect obedience of Christ, the greater Redeemer.

  1. Compassion Without Commission (Vs. 11-12)
    1. The boy in the basket grew and is now 40 years old, mighty in his words and deeds. (Acts 7:22) He was educated and raised by the Egyptian as a Prince, but his heart was with the Hebrew people. (Heb. 11:24-25) He was
    2. Moses sees the violence of a slave master toward a Hebrew, and strikes him down. He had rights as a Prince but this was outside of due process and would anger Pharaoh. Moses felt the burden of justice for his people, but acts in his flesh rather than awaiting for God’s call.

Application: Staying in step with God means waiting for his instruction, not moving our own timing. (Zech 4:6)

  1. Rejected and Realigned (Vs. 13-14)
    1. Moses’ leadership is questioned and the hidden things have come to light. God has not yet made him a deliverer in the eyes of the people.
    2. Moses is rejected – and this rejection will be pivotal to Moses’ preparation.

Application: God uses rejection as part of preparation to deepen our dependence on Him. Trust God’s perfect timing and plan. Here Moses receives a divine realignment.

  1. From the Palace to the Pasture (15-22)
    1. Moses flees to Midian, knowing that Pharaoh wants to kill him. This will be a time of training, obscurity and preparation.
    2. God showed Moses during this time that his identity was not in himself or in Egypt.
    3. Even in obscurity God provided him a place, a family and a flock.

Application: God’s work in us is a process of sanctification. Jesus learned obedience through what he suffered – not because he was rebellious, but because he became flesh to identify with us. There will be seasons of delay, humility, and obedience training to deepen our dependence on Him.

See Christ in this passage of Exodus 2: This section prepares us for the ultimate Deliverer. Jesus is the embodiment of the one who identified with His people by becoming flesh. (Jn 1:14) He was the rejected, humble servant, who delivers us from sin. Do you believe in the Great Deliverer, Jesus, through faith in His life, death, burial and resurrection? Trust Him in salvation. Trust Him with your life, sanctification and service.
