It is a blessing to study God’s Word and to be ministered to through it. The writer of Hebrews makes a statement in chapter 6, that will bless a redeemed and blood bought child of God: “We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.”
He goes on to remind us that our confidence is not anchored to circumstance but to the very nature and unchanging character of God. God made a promise and oath through two unchanging things. His Word and His nature. This reminds us that we are secure because He cannot fail, He cannot lie and He will not forget His own.
Christians seek Christ for refuge, who is our eternal high priest. Our soul’s anchor is not dropped, but sent upward to God himself. That anchor holds strong, through the veil because of Jesus. What are eternal truths about God that anchor us?
He reigns. He saves. He is at work. He is coming again.
May these truths anchor your very soul. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Our prayer is that these truths will encourage you and lead you to further study of the Word of God.
CH Spurgeon said, “The anchor of our hope is fastened to the Throne of God. Though the cable is unseen, every tug of faith feels the pull of eternity.” Adrian Rogers also stated, “Faith is not clinging to God in our strength; it is resting in the God who cannot let go.”
Let’s briefly look at these four eternal truths together.
1. God Reigns Sovereignly
“The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.” Psalm 103:19
“Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.” Psalm 115:3
Is the throne of Heaven shakable? Is it subject to being overthrown? Know that God’s throne has not moved, and it will not be overcome. God’s rule is eternal, His plan and purpose is perfect, and there is no comparing His Holiness and wisdom.
Spurgeon wrote, “There is no attribute more comforting to His children than that of God’s sovereignty.”
May this statement from The Valley of Vision “The Divine Sovereignty” bless you.
“Thou art the blessed Controller of all things, the Lord of lords and the King of kings. All things are divided among Thy servants; kingdoms rise and fall at Thy appointment. Thy providence controls every event, Thy will governs every act, and Thy purpose will stand.”
2. Christ is the Victor and His Gospel Is Still Saving
He must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.” 1 Corinthians 15:25
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:10
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” Romans 1:16
The empty tomb is STILL empty. Christ’s victory is historical, present and eternal. The saving power of Jesus’ blood still brings dead sinners to new life.
“The gospel is written in the blood of the Lamb, and its ink will never fade.” – John Bunyan
3. The Holy Spirit IS at Work
“The Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” Romans 8:26
“Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6
“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25
The Holy Spirit is sanctifying the Saints. When we slip, the Spirit steadies us. When we struggle to pray, He intercedes for us. The Spirit is convicting and changing believers by God’s infallible Word.
John Owen wrote, “The Holy Spirit alone gives efficacy to the Word, life to our prayers, and holiness to our souls.”
4. The Church is Marching Forward for His Glory and is Awaiting His Return
“I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18
“For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.” Habakkuk 2:14
“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.” Revelation 21:3
His Church, The Bride of Christ, will not be quiet, nor will She fail. There is none who can overcome. Every generation has stood witness to the Gospel’s advance. By God’s grace – whether through tears, blood of martyrs or faithful servants – the Church has and does proclaim the Gospel.
“Fear not for the Church of Christ when ministers die, and saints are taken away. Christ can ever maintain His own cause. The stars are all in His right hand.” J.C. Ryle
“We must remember that the Church is Christ’s body. It is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. It cannot be finally defeated any more than Christ Himself can be defeated.” Lloyd-Jones
Closing Thoughts
“Glorious God, The church is Thy chosen, nurtured in Thy love, guarded by Thy Spirit, kept by Thy power, and destined for Thy glory. May I love her because she is His for whom my soul was given.”
As we serve the Lord this week, be reminded of these eternal truths.
- God is reigning sovereigly.
- Christ is reigning in victory.
- The Spirit is at work by God’s Word.
- The Church will not be defeated, and we wait on His glorious return.
“To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:21
